Most fish oil supplements use DHA in triglyceride or ethyl ester form. Your body absorbs some of it. But very little actually reaches your brain. Because your brain has a security gate called the blood-brain barrier, and regular fish oil DHA gets blocked at the door.

The science - what actually gets past the gate
When DHA is bound to phospholipids, the same healthy fats that make up your brain's own cell membranes, something different happens. It crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Think of it as a VIP pass. Your brain recognises phospholipid-bound DHA because that's how DHA already exists inside your neurons. Research shows it's transported via a specific protein called MFSD2A that selectively carries this form into the brain. Regular fish oil doesn't get this treatment.
